How One Publisher is Tweaking its Event Strategy and Predicting 10 Growth

first_img“The real bad news is that the business in 2010 will take further hits in both exhibit space and attendance, and we’re budgeting accordingly-almost all of the big shows will suffer double digit declines in revenue and earnings,” he adds. “This will be the first time our shows have declined in a meaningful and painful way.”Everything Channel’s Five Steps To Growth Still, one b-to-b publisher saw growth from events in 2009 and is predicting 10 percent growth from events in 2010. “Based on the way people got squeezed this year, marketers are going into 2010 with compromised budgets,” says Nancy Hammervik, senior vice president and managing director of Everything Channel Events. “One of the positive outcomes of a challenging market is that it causes you to think smarter. You get as tight as you can while evaluating everything you do.”Here are some of the steps Hammervik is taking:1. Hosted Buyer/Seller Events: Much of the reason Everything Channel Events is up in 2009 is its hosted model, in which the publisher qualifies a very specific audience and guarantees deliverability by flying out buyers to meet with vendors. “The conferences are smaller but they deliver higher ROI for clients,” says Hammervik. 2. Re-evaluating the Life Span of Legacy Events (including the Hosted Model) and Emphasizing Scale: Everything Channel is assessing which legacy events have run their course. “That’s something we’ve never really had to do before,” says Hammervik. That includes scaling back the hosted model in favor of events that can produce larger margins. “The thing about hosted models is they don’t scale,” she adds. “The bigger they get, the more they cost. The way you grow is to do more-we went from six events to 24. The margin for hosted events is typically half your revenue. At first that sounds great: if you do a $2 million event, you make $1 million. But if you have a $500,000 event, it’s $250,000 to just recruit and host.”Everything Channel has had a standalone channel for the Latin American community and did hosted events that put buyers and sellers together in Miami. “It’s been five years, it matches the budgets vendors will spend on second or third tier emerging markets, but it requires a lot of energy and resources without offering a lot of return on margin,” says Hammervik Folding four events-two retail XChanges, the Latin America XChange and Project Portfolio & Management-into other events will save Everything Channel almost $4 million in expenses next year, according to Hammervik3. Launching New EventsStill, Hammervik recognizes that saving on expenses doesn’t equal generating revenue. “We all realize that with co-locating events, one plus one plus one will never equal three,” Hammervik adds. “Vendors won’t spend what they did at an individual event. If we combine XChange Latin America with the U.S. event, it may equal one and a half out of two. We’ll lose 50 percent on revenue, but we’re saving significantly on expenses.”Everything Channel is rolling out a series of regional events around the emerging category of “cloud computing.” “We did something similar five years ago with managed services-people didn’t really understand what it was about and we responded with road shows,” Hammervik says. “We’re rolling out at least six one-day regional events. We’re being more cautious about not doing three-day events. That makes it easier for attendees and vendors to manage.” The publisher will also launch a series of events recognizing women executives in high tech, including a “Top 100 Women” channel. The program will include three events for women executives including a three-day conference and two one-day awards shows on the East and West Coasts. Everything Channel will also take a similar approach recognizing the Top 100 CIOs.4. Custom Events Will Drive Half the Growth Next YearHammervik is making an aggressive push into custom event services. “We have been doing that on the side but we’re making a significant investment next year in staff and marketing to try to make it a big business,” she says. “We think half our growth next year will come from custom event services.”While marketers have increasingly taken on publishing duties for themselves-including events, Webinars, even magazines-Hammervik sees an opportunity for publishers to win that business back. “Vendors themselves have lost headcount and resources. Their core competency is making and selling technology, not doing events.” 5. Complementing Live Events With Virtual EventsMany publishers have experimented with virtual events in place of their traditional live event this year (including FOLIO:). Everything Channel sees an opportunity in offering Web services around live events as both a preview and community-builder. “A month before the live event, the virtual event will be active,” Hammervik says. “Sponsors can pre-qualify attendees and schedule live meetings with prospects.” Hammervik is looking at charging an additional $5,000-$10,000 to add virtual components to live event sponsorships. “If we have 100 vendors, that will be a significant revenue stream,” she says. If there is one area suffering almost as much as print, it’s events. While trade show revenue dropped 3.5 percent in 2008, it fell a whopping 20.1 percent through the first quarter of 2009, according to American Business Media. Reed Exhibitions (which operates independently of Reed Business Information), saw revenue and adjusted operating profits plunge 22 percent and 26 percent, respectively, in the first half of the year.Nielsen Business Media vp of business development Eric Biener says events haven’t fallen as much as print but when they do, it hurts more. “Even small declines have a huge impact on our infrastructure,” he adds.Hanley Wood enjoyed a record year for its events in 2008 but is experiencing significant declines in 2009 (two long-time executives, exhibitions group president Galen Poss and executive vice president Michael Green, left the company in June). However, it’s 2010 that really concerns CEO Frank Anton.last_img read more

first_imgTufan Sarker and his elder brother Matin SarkerTwo brothers are allegedly in control of the crime world in Bogra, a district in northern Bangladesh.Tufan Sarker and his elder brother Matin Sarker allegedly indulge in various crimes, including drug peddling, murder, extortion, and land grabbing.Matin was sentenced to 27 years’ imprisonment, but the verdict was stayed by the High Court.Through various illegal means, he became a millionaire almost overnight.Matin Sarker is now general secretary of the District Truck Owners Association and also joint general secretary of Bogra town Jubo League, a front organisation of ruling Awami League.Local residents in Bogra said no one can talk openly about these two brothers. They control all illegal drug trade in the district. The Member of Parliament in Bogra constituency-1 (Sonatola-Sariakandi) and former organising secretary of central Awami League Abdul Mannan said the party will not take responsibility of those who carry out such heinous activities in the name of the party.According to law enforcment agencies, Matin Sarker is the second of eight sons of Mujibur Rahman from Chaksutrapur Kosaipara of Bogra town, while Tufan is the youngest. Their father used to sell meat.None of his sons completed school, but now all of them are involved in Awami League politics.TufanThe 25-year-old Tufan got involved in tannery business with a small amount of capital. He entered politics thanks to his brother Matin Sarker when Awami League came to power in 2009.The two brothers have now unleashed rampant crimes in Bogra.Three months ago a stationery shop in Talukdar market, near Bogra sadar police station, was forcefully taken over. A sign was erected in front of the shop, with the words, ‘contact in case of any problem’. Tufan Sarker’s name and phone number was given. The owner could not protest and later sold his shop for a very low price. Now the victim does not want to talk about it.A number of victims of various crimes said, Tufan and his accomplices collect Tk 50 from each CNG-run auto rickshaw, Tk 60 from battery-run Easybikes and Tk 20 from battery-run rickshaws and vans. Each owner of rickshaw and van has to deposit Tk 1800 to become a member of the owners’ association. He also collects Tk 200 as toll at night from every bus, truck and coach coming from different districts at Satmatha, Charmatha, Tinmatha and Matidhali intersections of Bogra town. His accomplices also collected toll in broad daylight at Charmatha outskirts of the town after forcefully halting various vehicles. There are allegations that a certain amount of the money goes to a section of the police, political leaders, labour leaders and middlemen.Sramik League Bogra unit president Rafiqul Islam said, “I am ashamed of his heinous crimes. I am helpless despite knowing his crimes as he has the blessings of several influential leaders.”Speaking to Prothom Alo, superintendent of police in Bogra Asaduzzaman said Tufan’s toll collection from auto rickshaws has been stopped. Tufan has been arrested after the allegations of raping a teenage girl.”We will take legal actions if we find any proof of other crimes,” he added. On 4 April 2012 police arrested Tufan in possession of the drugs yaba and phensidyl. Later, he was released on bail. On 20 July, Tufan and his three brothers, Jhumur, Omar and Shohagh were arrested in a case filed for an attempt to murder. They did not have to stay long in jail this time as well.Additional SP of Bogra Arifur Rahman Mandal said there are six cases against Tufan. The cases include raping of teenage girl, murder and drug peddling. In 2015, police arrested Tufan Sarker with several hundred phensidyl bottles from his house. He was also accused of killing Jubo Dal leader Imran in 2013. The victim’s mother then alleged that Tufan and his brothers were behind the killing. Now Imran’s mother does not want to talk.Tufan and his wife posses two cars. They have an under-construction five-storey building at Chaksutrapur tannery godown area of the town. They have two flats in the posh areas of Bogra and Dhaka. He launched a business ‘Turjo Sanitary Store’, investing about Tk 1 crore (Tk 10 million) at Chakjadu Lane of the town. District AL unit president Mamtaz Uddin inaugurated the store.Mamtaz said, “I was the president of the chamber. So I can inaugurate a business.”Organising secretary of Bogra district unit of AL AKM Asadur Rahman said those who gave party posts to men like Tufan, were equally responsible for raping and torturing the teenage girl.Matin SarkerOn 24 August 2012, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Jubo League leader Matin Sarker from his office at tannery godown lane and seized phensidyl, beer, heroin, knives, and Tk 10 lakh (Tk 1 million). Jubo League demonstrated in Bogra town the following day, demanding removal of the RAB commander. At that time, police said Matin was a top terror. There are six cases against him in Sadar police station. He was sentenced to 27 years’ jail in an arms case in 2001.Police officials said, Golam Rasul was murdered at Nurani intersection on 18 June in 1998. Munshi, who was close to Matin, was murdered over internal clashes at Chaksutrapur in 2001.Matin was the prime accused in the murder of Juba Dal leader Imran on 2 December 2012. Police ultimately did not indict him.Locals said district AL joint secretary general Manjurul Alam brought Matin into politics, but now the former does not back Matin.Matin is now close to district AL president Mamtaz Uddin.Speaking to Prothom Alo, Mamtaz Uddin said, “Investigate who brought Matin into politics.”Prothom Alo correspondent visited the residence of Matin at Chamrapatti on Monday. However, he was unwilling to talk to the media.*This report originally published in Prothom Alo print edition, has been rewritten in English by Rabiul Islam.last_img read more
