CoA clears Kapils panel of conflict paves way for coach appointment

admin No Comments

first_imgNew Delhi: The Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Committee was on Monday cleared of any conflict of interest by the Committee of Administrators (COA), paving the way for the panel to appoint India’s next men’s coach by mid-August. Besides the country’s first World Cup-wining skipper Dev, the newly-appointed Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprises Anshuman Gaekwad and former women’s captain Shantha Rangaswamy. “We have checked (the declaration form). It is fine. All clear,” COA chief Vinod Rai said when asked if the CAC has got the mandate to appoint the next chief coach. I said it has to go to the Ethics Officer (DK Jain) to decide on conflict of interest. Ad-Hoc committee is not in the constitution. As such I have voiced my dissent,” Edulji said. Also Read – Vijender’s next fight on Nov 22, opponent to be announced later”It is not CoA’s domain to decide who is conflicted or not. It has to be done by the Ethics Officer. I stick to my earlier stand (when Raman was appointed). An ad-hoc committee cannot pick the coach. It is not in the constitution,” Edulji further added. The current support staff comprising incumbent head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun, batting coach Sanjay Bangar and fielding coach R Sridhar were given a 45-day extension following the World Cup, covering the ongoing West Indies tour from August 3 to September 3. The trio of Dev, Gaekwad and Shantha, then called an ad-hoc committee, had appointed W V Raman as the women’s team coach in December. Regarding the conduct of BCCI elections on October 22, Rai said that 26 state associations are fully compliant with the Lodha reforms and have appointed their electoral officers for the state unit polls. The CoA met in the capital to discuss a host of issues ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on August 8, and screening the conflict of interest declaration form topped its agenda. He added that the “CAC’s decision will be final and the meeting (interview) with shortlisted candidates will happen in middle of August followed by appointment.”last_img read more

Rabat- Member of the Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM) Omar Zerad was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison on charges of corruption. The Criminal Chamber of Court of First Instance in Fez condemned Zerad, who is also deputy mayor of Targuit town in the northern region of Al Hoceima, and his deputy and accomplice, Mohamed Zamou, to three years in jail on charges of corruption, bribery, and abuse of power to intimidate and influence others into action. Zerad also received a fine of MAD 730,000.Throughout the investigation, the politician denied all corruption charges leveled against him and pleaded not guilty in court. However, the prosecutor presented  testimonies from witnesses and Zerad’s own criminal record, including forgery and false testimonies that led the court to rule against him, reported the newspaper Al Massae. To address problems of corruption, the Moroccan government has proposed a wide variety of measures, including the new anti-corruption hotline (0537718888) and a greater national plan to end all forms of corruption by 2050, such as administrative corruption, public funds mismanagement, and power abuse.Although Morocco slightly improved in the Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index in 2017 with 40 points compared to 37 points in 2016 below the global average of 43, it still has a long way to go for the realization of social justice. read more

Efforts ongoing to achieve robust peacekeeping say top UN officials

admin No Comments

15 September 2009The United Nations is pressing ahead with efforts to boost its peacekeeping capacity, from ensuring sufficient personnel and equipment for operations to providing effective support on the ground, to help transform the lives of people worldwide, top officials said today. The heads of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and the Department of Field Support (DFS) described how they are seeking to improve the way they operate through the New Horizons initiative and fresh thinking on a support strategy for field missions. Issued in July as a non-paper, New Horizons highlights the need to strengthen command and control systems at every level, including through more robust accountability frameworks between Headquarters and mission leaders. It identifies three key challenges currently underpinning operational dilemmas for blue helmets: robust peacekeeping, protection of civilians and critical peacebuilding tasks.“So far the reaction we received from Member States is altogether extremely positive,” Alain Le Roy, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, told a news conference in New York.In particular, he highlighted the presidential statement issued by the Security Council last month, in which it endorsed the non-paper and encouraged the Secretariat to continue provide planning and support for peacekeeping missions. In addition to New Horizons, DFS has issued another non-paper on a support strategy that, among other matters, emphasizes the need to protect UN personnel and to ensure appropriate living and working conditions in missions, while maximizing safety and security. All of this is taking place at a time when the services of UN peacekeepers are in greater demand than ever, noted Mr. Le Roy. Deployment is at a record high, with more than 113,000 peacekeepers serving in 18 operations on four continents. Also, Member States recently approved an $8.2 billion peacekeeping support budget.“Member States are under a lot of pressure because of the financial crisis. They have really focused on us thinking ‘out-of-the-box’ on how to better manage the resources that are assigned to missions, and how to get a best value out of those resources,” said Susanna Malcorra, Head of Field Support.“We are trying to get up to speed and make sure that we align ourselves not only in how to better manage the resources but also how to set up better frameworks to be more accountable, which is one of the key issues that Member States raise,” she said. Both officials acknowledged that several missions, including in the Darfur region of Sudan and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), still lack vital personnel and equipment.Despite the difficulties, Ms. Malcorra, who recently visited the UN mission in DRC (MONUC), said that the results achieved on the ground with the help of the world body have been “absolutely incredible.”Residents of a small village in the volatile eastern region of DRC told her how only two months ago they could not hold their traditional weekly markets due to insecurity. Today 1,500 people come to the market thanks to the members of an Indian contingent – serving with MONUC and living in the village – that escorts people coming from the surrounding areas.“To me that was an example of how we can help transform the lives of people,” said Ms. Malcorra. “Despite the problems, we need to remind ourselves that what we do, at the end of the day, is about real people, and we are making big progress in that regard.” read more

UN names Drylands Ambassadors to raise awareness on land degradation

admin No Comments

11 October 2011The United Nations today announced the appointment of two Drylands Ambassadors – a renowned expert on agriculture and forests and a South African gospel singer – to help raise international awareness about the problem of land degradation. Dennis Garrity, the former director general of the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), and South African gospel singer Deborah Fraser were named Ambassadors by Luc Gnacadja, the Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).They will serve in that capacity alongside the Spanish soccer ace Carlos Marchena, who was previously designated as a Drylands Ambassador.“Politicians and other leaders are often accused of being all talk and no action. Drylands Ambassadors are just the opposite,” said Mr. Gnacadja. “Their role is entirely action-orientated. Like our earlier Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Champions such as the President of Future Forest, Kwon Byong-hyon of the Republic of Korea, they are ordinary people who achieve extraordinary things.”Dr. Garrity headed ICRAF, which is based in Nairobi, Kenya, from 2001 until last month. His extensive career and global experience made him an ideal champion of drylands, according to Mr. Gnacadja.“His work on developing agroforestry alternatives to slash-and-burn agriculture is widely recognized, as are his efforts to develop institutional innovations related to farmer-led organizations in sustainable agriculture and natural resources management.”Accepting the nomination, Dr. Garrity said: “I will, in particular, hope to contribute to the Secretariat’s efforts to highlight the role of agroforestry, evergreen agriculture, and farmer-managed natural regeneration as critical opportunities for making vast progress on the ground in the regeneration of healthy farms and ecosystems.”Ms. Fraser, or Debs as she is popularly known in music circles, is regarded by many as a South African gospel superstar, a title she resists.“People make me a superstar and treat me that way. But I am not a superstar. I just regard myself as an ordinary God-fearing person. Today’s enemy is poverty and ignorance, and it has to be fought with all the might at our disposal,” she said after her appointment. “There are a lot of people who go hungry and yet there is land they could be utilizing profitably.”Mr. Gnacadja pointed out that every decade the world loses an area of productive land equivalent to the size of South Africa – 1.2 million square kilometres – through desertification, land degradation and drought.“I am delighted that the tremendous musical talent of Deborah Fraser can be harnessed in spreading global awareness.” read more

Sudanese refugees begin arriving at safer UN camps inside Chad

admin No Comments

Today a convoy of 240 refugees left the border for a newly constructed camp at Farchana, 55 kilometres away – joining a group of 148 refugees who were transferred to the same camp on Saturday.Eventually the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) expects that Farchana will house between 9,000 and 12,000 refugees, part of some 95,000 people who have escaped the war-torn Darfur region in western Sudan and crossed into Chad. The new camps in Chad’s interior have been erected by UN agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in a bid to protect the refugees from repeated cross-border raids by Sudanese militias.Dalma, one of the first refugees to reach Farchana, told UNHCR staff that she feels more secure in the new location. “I feel I can sleep in peace and not fear attacks by the militia,” she said. Each family that arrives and registers at camps such as Farchana is allocated a plot of land, a tent, 15 days of food rations and a relief package containing supplies such blankets, soap and mosquito nets.Fabrice Liebaut, an emergency protection officer for UNHCR in eastern Chad, said relocating the refugees would be a difficult challenge. “Even though many refugees expressed their desire to move to a more secure camp, the relocation still generates a lot of anxiety among them. Moving away from the border means moving away from their original home in Sudan and from families and friends they might have left behind.”UNHCR officials are anxious to establish other camps quickly ahead of the anticipated arrival of the rainy season in May, when many local roads will become impassable. Two other sites for potential camps have been identified. The Darfur region has been torn by violence since early last year, when conflict erupted between the Sudanese Government and the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA). read more

Animal ethics organization launched by Brock University professor

admin No Comments

A first-of-its-kind institute to lead research, education and advocacy for animal ethics worldwide has been launched by Brock University professor David Fennell.Based on an interdisciplinary approach, the International Institute for Animal Ethics (IIAE) focuses on how moral knowledge and best practice can stimulate change in the use of animals primarily in the tourism industry, along with other related contexts.“When we place only instrumental value on animals, reducing them to objects of commerce and entertainment, we concede that suffering, poor welfare and a lack of respect is acceptable,” said Fennell, a renowned researcher, author and advocate in the areas of ecotourism, and tourism and animal ethics. Fennell is the co-director and co-founder of the IIAE along with Marloes Van de Goor, a Dutch entrepreneur who also works in the field.A unique aspect of the Institute is that it places emphasis on both research and practice. In support of its mission, IIAE’s programming will include:Developing the widest interdisciplinary network of scholars and professionals around the world who are researching and working in the areas of tourism and animal ethics.Writing curriculum and teaching online courses (for the general public), degree programs for students and offering certificate programs for professionals in the private, governmental and non-profit sectors.Awarding funding for graduate student and other scholarly research in the areas of animal ethics and tourism.Organizing conferences and having a presence at industry events around the world to educate industry leaders and practitioners on best practices.Consulting directly with regulatory bodies such as the World Tourism Organization (WTO) or Ministries of Tourism to help bring about significant policy change around the use of animals in tourism.“By harnessing the power of existing scholarly research, funding current and future innovative research, educating industry professionals and the general public and being involved in interdisciplinary conferences, IIAE is poised to lead the change on animal ethics,” Fennell said.IIAE will hold its first major conference June 1-3, 2017 in St. Catharines. Conference registration opens May 2, 2016.For more information on IIAE, visit www.instituteforanimalethics.org read more

Lucapas sparklingdiamond success in both Africa and Australia

admin No Comments

first_imgDiamond producer, ASX-listed Lucapa Diamond Co Ltd says the company has begun to “shine bright” in the world of special diamonds. CEO and Managing Director, Stephen Wetherall, told the first day of the three day Paydirt Africa Down Under (ADU) mining conference in Perth that Lucapa was making “giant strides” at its flagship Lulo diamond project in Angola. It is also on track with the development of the Mothae kimberlite project in Lesotho, and has recently reported “staggering” drilling results at its Little Spring Creek discovery in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. At Mothae, in which Lucapa has acquired a 70% interest, it is constructing a 1.1 Mt/y diamond treatment plant, complete with XRT recovery technology. Part of a Phase 1 development program, the Mothae plant is scheduled to commence high-value production later this year.Lucapa, which is developing Mothae in partnership with the Government of Lesotho, is also refurbishing a bulk sampling plant and has commenced testing additional areas of the kimberlite pipe. The company has already recovered a number of large special diamonds, including two yellow diamonds weighing 89 ct and 25 ct from the bulk sampling program.Wetherall told the ADU audience that the plant at Mothae is on schedule for H2 2018 commissioning. The initial financial model for the Mothae plant supports production of 1.1 Mt/y in Phase 1 and 2.2 Mt/y in Phase 2, which is targeted for a 2021 start-up. The project has a current estimated mine life of 13.5 years, with a project NPV of approximately $85 million. At Lulo, already a prolific producer of large and premium-value alluvial diamonds, Lucapa and its partners continue to advance a search for the primary kimberlite sources of these exceptional alluvial gems, with three drill rigs available in the ongoing kimberlite exploration program.Wetherall said Lulo has produced 11 +100 ct diamonds to date and is home to the highest $/ct alluvial diamond production and to some of the best and largest diamonds in the world, including the two largest diamonds ever produced in Angola.Lucapa’s kimberlite exploration operation is aiming to locate the primary source(s) of the alluvial diamonds it is currently miningWetherall said a large number of big kimberlite targets have already been drilled underlying the vast alluvial fields. An ongoing, all year-round exploration campaign includes a drilling program which is extracting core for mineral chemistry analysisTo date, 54 targets have been drilled, with 40 of those confirmed as kimberlite, and a number of targets have been identified for follow up.Wetherall told the ADU audience that Lucapa has recently achieved exceptional results at its Little Spring Creek discovery in Western Australia, with a new drill hole returning 1,100 diamonds, including 18 macro-diamonds and 1,082 micro-diamonds.“The latest micro-diamond results from the Little Spring Creek prospect within the Brooking project are some of the best I have seen in the diamond space. To recover 1,100 micro- and macro- diamonds from a 178 kg sample from a single drill hole is remarkable,” Wetharall said.“These exceptional results at Brooking underscore the prospectivity for diamond deposits in the Kimberley region of WA, which hosts the world-renowned deposits of Argyle and previously Ellendale. We look forward to the next phase of exploration at Brooking with great excitement.”Wetherall also revealed that Lucapa is investigating opportunities to expand its business outside of mining and exploration. This includes a move into the cutting and polishing sector of the diamond value chain.Wetherall said the cutting and polishing of stones would provide Lucapa’s mines with access to margins beyond mine gate on select or bespoke high-value diamonds and will also provide rough price protection, along with an additional downstream income.last_img read more

EXCLUSIVE 68 offer group personal pension plans

admin No Comments

first_imgEXCLUSIVE RESEARCH: Group personal pension (GPP) plans remain the most popular primary workplace scheme, according to the Employee Benefits/Close Brothers Pensions research 2015.The research, which surveyed a total of 259 respondents in September 2015, found that while 68% of repondents offer this type of scheme as their organisation’s primary workplace pension arrangement, this percentage has declined slightly from the 78% that did so in 2014’s Employee Benefits/Close Brothers Pension research, published in November 2014. But, although figures have slightly dropped, the contract-based defined contribution (DC) GPP scheme has remained the most popular type of pension offered by respondents since 2005.Master trusts also remain popular schemes offered by employers, as shown by the 22% that cited it as their primary workplace pension plan this year.Trust-based DC schemes are offered by a larger percentage of respondents this year: 45% now offer it as their primary pension scheme and 8% as their secondary, compared to 40% and 3%, respectively, in 2014. Bjorn Borg holds compulsory exercise hour for Swedish employees

admin No Comments

first_imgSomething for the weekend: Sports clothing retail organisation Bjorn Borg holds a weekly mandatory exercise hour for 212 Sweden-based employees in order to increase employee productivity.Every Friday between 11am and 12pm, the Stockholm-based office is closed for business as employees attend a nearby gym for a specially arranged exercise class exclusively for Bjorn Borg employees. The compulsory workout classes, which all employees must participate in, differ each week, with previous sessions including boxing, Crossfit, high intensity interval training (HIIT) and yoga. If employees cannot attend the class, for example if they are off-site or pregnant, then they are encouraged to complete another form of physical activity instead.Bjorn Borg, which implemented the mandatory exercise hour two years ago, introduced the initiative as it believed regular exercise would help improve employees’ performance, give them more energy for their working day and help them to process data better.Henrik Bunge, chief executive officer at Bjorn Borg, told MSN: “If [employees] don’t want to exercise or be a part of the [organisational] culture, [they] have to go.”Pernilla Johansson, corporate communications manager, added: “It is a fantastic opportunity that we have; to work out during work hours without anybody protesting. It is a luxury that few people have. The Björn Borg sports hour is mandatory and all staff [have] to do it. Everybody will be challenged to come along and do the best according to their own fitness level. [Employees] compete against [themselves], not everybody else, and the idea here is that we all perform better in both life and work if we are active and fit.”Here at Employee Benefits, we think it would be a brilliant idea to slot in a workout to build up an appetite before lunch; not only would it act as an ice-breaker between colleagues and help us fit exercise into our super busy schedules, but it would also definitely provide an excuse to hit the shops for some snazzy new gymwear…last_img read more

UPDATE Advocates For Gun Reform Others For Gun Rights Rally During NRA

first_imgAnother view of inside #NRAConvention #NRAAM2018. #dallas @keranews pic.twitter.com/tq3ck5mVYn— Stella M. Chávez (@stellamchavez) May 4, 2018Presidential speech previewBack for a return engagement, President Trump’s address to the NRA comes after he temporarily strayed from the group’s strong opposition to tougher gun controls following the school shooting in Parkland, Florida — only to rapidly return to the fold. For the fourth year in a row, Trump will speak to the group. Last year, he became the first sitting president to appear in more than 30 years, declaring that the “assault” on the Second Amendment had ended.“The NRA was one of the biggest supporters of President Donald Trump and his campaign,” NRA spokesman Jason Brown told KERA. “Our NRA members were a large part of helping propel him to the White House. It’s continued support from President Trump, it’s continued commitment to defending the Second Amendment, and it feels good.”But this year’s speech comes as the issue of gun violence takes on new urgency after one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.Student survivors of the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 people dead are now leading a massive national gun control movement. While the shooting has not led to major changes from the White House or the Republican-led Congress, it did — at least briefly — prompt Trump to declare that he would stand up to the powerful gun lobby. He later backpedaled on that tough talk. What to expect this weekendAn estimated 80,000 people will be in town this weekend for the NRA’s annual meeting at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.“We fully anticipate that the Dallas community and visitors to this great city of Dallas will enjoy this event, participate, in whatever capacity, whether they’re protesters, counter-protesters, or supporters, with the highest level of decorum and civility,” said Paul Stokes, a Dallas assistant police chief, at a press conference.Protests are planned this weekend featuring groups opposed to the NRA and in support of gun reform. Stokes says First Amendment rights will be respected.“This is a high-profile event. So this isn’t much different than how we plan for other high-profile events,” he said. “We do have a very good blue print. And we make some adjustments based on what is happening at the convention center, but it is very consistent with our normal planning process.”The Dallas Police Department is working with officers from area cities, including Richardson, Garland, Grand Prairie, Mesquite and Irving. The NRA convention runs through Sunday.Check out the schedule of events in our guide.Protests planned this weekendSeveral protests are planned Friday and Saturday while the National Rifle Association holds its convention in Dallas.Donna Schmidt leads the Dallas chapter of Moms Demand Action. She’s helping organize a Saturday morning rally in front of City Hall. Her group will also train activists to counter the NRA’s lobbying efforts.“Frankly I’m not that concerned about a convention as I am about the NRA board and its leadership that continue to push this ‘guns everywhere agenda,’ Schmidt told KERA. “It’s the ongoing stranglehold that they’ve had on leadership in our country that we’re going to change.”There are more protests, vigils and speeches planned throughout the weekend to oppose the NRA.Open Carry Texas, a gun rights group, is planning a counter-demonstration on Saturday.Outside of the @NRA convention in Dallas today, @stephanieskuo talked with student organizers Julia Heilrayne and Olivia Hoffman + Victoria Coy of @amnestyusa. pic.twitter.com/Ne4PSjIesZ— KERA News (@keranews) May 4, 2018Find details on planned protests in our guide.Scenes from the conventionWhat border patrol recruiters are handing out here at the #NRAAM @TexasStandard @KUT @npr pic.twitter.com/ZyEl37btVy— Alain Stephens (@AlainStephens) May 4, 2018 At the NRA convention in Dallas. Greg Abbott told the crowd Friday afternoon that the answer to gun violence is to strengthen gun rights under the Constitution’s Second Amendment. He also talked about Stephen Willeford, who grabbed his rifle and ran across the street to open fire on the gunman who slaughtered 26 people in a church in the small town of Sutherland Springs in November.Willeford is an NRA member who has served as an instructor. He was honored by the NRA earlier Friday. After he exchanged gunfire with 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley, Willeford jumped in a man’s pickup truck and they pursued him. Kelley died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.Abbott said “because (Willeford) had a gun, he saved lives.”Trump assured attendees of the National Rifle Association’s Leadership Forum Friday that his administration is fighting to protect their constitutional right to bear arms.Trump told the crowd gathered inside the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in downtown Dallas that their right to bear arms is “under siege.” But he pledged that those rights “will never, ever be under siege as long as I’m your president.” The president didn’t focus solely on guns or the Second Amendment in his speech. He also implored NRA attendees not to become “complacent” and vote for Republicans in the midterm elections in November. In his speech, he endorsed Gov. AHS Three Kids Walk Into the Woods

admin No Comments

first_imgStay on target Top Movie and TV Trailers You Might Have Missed This WeekAmerican Horror Story Takes Us Back to the Days of Witches and Warlocks Well, I guess the showrunners also felt they were running out of people to kill in these last couple episodes because we start with footage from three characters we’ve never seen before. Three kids named Sophie, Milo, and Todd, who embody every millennial stereotype you can think of, are wandering through the woods looking for the Roanoke house. They’re filming everything, of course, so they can post the videos to Instagram and “blow up the internet.” They’re fans of “My Roanoke Nightmare,” and are discussing how it’s really a story about racism and patriarchy when the spooky stuff starts happening. They run into a bleeding woman, running through the woods. She keeps mentioning her car. They follow her, and they come to a clearing with an overturned car. The woman is nowhere to be found. Sophie checks inside the wrecked car and finds the dead body of the woman they were following. The next time we see the trio, they’re talking to the police. Apparently, when the cops investigated the car, they didn’t find the body. They think the kids are just screwing around and threaten to arrest them for trespassing if they go near the house again. Todd even laughs about how their situation is just like every horror movie. Well at least someone on this show watches them. Not that it’ll help them survive, of course.Meet the kids who show up for one episode and die horribly. (Photo: Screenshot via FX)We cut back to the Roanoke house, right where we left off last week. Dylan explains that he was given instructions by Sydney to show up at the front door with the pig head on to add a few scares to what he assumed would be a dry point in the season. Lee and Audrey convince him that all the horrific stuff they’ve experienced was real and that they need to go back to the Polk’s house. Dylan says he’ll draw on his military experience to lead them.At the Polk house, Audrey searches the barn and finds Monet, still alive and tied to a chair. Lee finds the tape and tries to delete the footage of her admitting to her ex-husband’s murder. Dylan stays outside to hotwire the Polks’ truck so they can make an escape. He manages to start the engine but is stabbed by one of the Polks from behind. So much for that military training. Lee walks out with the camera threatening to show the footage to the cops and turn the Polks in. They’re interrupted by the torch-wielding ghosts. The Polk brother drives away in the truck, and Lee drops the camera and runs off into the woods. Audrey and Monet run out of the barn to find Dylan dead and the camera on the ground. Audrey picks it up, and they escape.Monet and Audrey run back to the Roanoke house and argue over why they chose to do that. It’s not like they’re any safer inside. Monet realizes Lee is gone. Audrey says they have the camera and now they’ll be able to prove their innocence. They watch the tape and find out that Lee did, in fact, kill her ex. As they watch the tape, we see Lee stumbling through the woods. She meets Scathach, the forest spirit played by Lady Gaga in “My Roanoke Nightmare.” Scathach feeds Lee a heart, just as she did for The Butcher centuries ago.Audrey (Sarah Paulson) caught by Lee. (Photo: Screenshot via FX)The kids, meanwhile, are back in the woods trying to prove to their followers that they weren’t lying about the body. They run into Lee, who is not looking so great. She stabs Todd and chases the other two into the woods. They come across the production trailer and see the dead bodies outside. With Lee close behind, they run into the trailer and find they’re able to watch what’s going on at the Roanoke house on the monitors. They see that Lee has entered the house and is about to kill Audrey and Monet. Sophie calls the police, but surprise: The police don’t believe them. Sophie and Milo run to the house to save the actors. At the house, Audrey and Monet see that Lee has entered and confront her about the murder of her ex. Lee holds a cleaver and is talking a lot like The Butcher, but for whatever reason, that doesn’t seem to bother them. Monet says she’s not scared of Lee, but Lee pushes her over the banister and Audrey is impaled on a broken pillar. Guess I was wrong about her being the one to survive. Audrey escapes through the tunnel in the basement, but Lee is waiting for her on the other side. She slices into Audrey’s shoulder with her cleaver and leaves her on the floor of the tunnel.Sophie and Milo find the house, but stop when they see the torch-carrying figures in the front yard. They see Dylan, still alive for now, being dragged in front of the crowd. From his chest-mounted camera, we see his intestines torn out. Sophie and Milo turn to run, but are caught by Lee and dragged in front of the crowd. Lee has taken on the role of The Butcher. She stands at the center of the crowd as Sophie and Milo are impaled on wooden poles and burned alive. The only survivor of this season (Adina Porter). (Photo: Screenshot via FX)The next morning, the police arrive, having heard reports of a lynch mob from someone watching the kids’ live-stream over the internet. They find all the bodies, and Lee still alive. She begs them to get her out of there and the police help her into a car. They then see that Audrey is also still alive, though bleeding from her shoulder. She crawls towards the police, who help her towards the car. When she sees Lee, she flies into a rage, calls her a murderer, grabs the police officer’s gun and tries to shoot her. The cops open fire and kill Audrey. Lee, seemingly with no memory of the night before, is the one who survives. After last week’s horrifying and disturbing episode, this week seemed almost tame by comparison. Well, until the very end. Just when I thought American Horror Story had run out of disturbing ways to kill someone, they impale two people through the rectum (that is what was happening, right?) and set them on fire. As for the rest of the episode, it was a little light on scares and a little too heavy on the slasher cliches. Guess they were luring us into a false sense of complacency for that final scene. The real exciting part though is what happens next week. Everyone is dead except for one person that one person is finally getting away from the house and there’s still one episode to go. So where do they go from here? We’ve seen in a preview that Lee will be put on trial for her murders because I guess Ryan Murphy loves courtroom drama now. Knowing this show, that’s not all it’s going to be. But how do you make a trial scary? The final episode is shaping up to be something completely unexpected.last_img read more

Entire Abandoned Spanish Villages Are Being Sold Cheap to Raise Money

admin No Comments

first_imgIn most Western countries, it seems like house prices just keep on going up and up. As populations increase, demand for homes rises and the value of the property just gets higher and higher. In certain parts of the world, however, especially under economies going through troubled times, some incredible properties can be found for shockingly low prices. Over in Spain, deep in the rural countryside of this beautiful European nation, many historic stone homes that have been standing for decades are available for a fraction of what you’d expect to pay. In fact, entire villages and hamlets are actually being sold, with some available for under $100,000.SpainNaturally, there are real estate agents keen to get in on the action. Interviewed by NPR, British real estate expert Mark Adkinson shared details of how his company, Galician Country Homes, works to find abandoned homes and villages, trying to track down the descendants of the formers owners and arrange sales.AdChoices广告inRead invented by TeadsAdkinson’s work can be tiring, as the home-owners can be difficult to track down. He revealed that many of the properties he finds have simply been left abandoned for decades — and in many cases, whole villages are just left to turn into eerie lifeless towns.View of the small village of Moros, province of Zaragoza, Aragón, Spain. Photo by Diego Delso CC BY-SA 4.0O Penso is one example of these abandoned towns. Complete with 100 acres of land, half a dozen homes, and a few barns, the whole place is being sold for around $230,000; an eye-wateringly low price for such a lot of land and property, not to mention the fact that the whole place is surrounded by stunning scenery and only a few miles from the beach.Adkinson also explained that the locals who do actually stick around want to see some life return to these sleepy little villages and hamlets. Many of them have fond memories of seeing children playing in the streets and hearing the noise of friendly chatter and fiestas for special occasions, but all of that is lost to the history books, for now.Belchite ruins, SpainSo how did these villages and properties become so neglected? Well, it’s all a question of changing times. As society has evolved and urban centers have grown and developed, many people simply prefer to live in or near big cities for the job opportunities and amenities these locations provide.Related Video: Drone captures amazing abandoned mountain top villageThe sad fact of the matter is that residents of these “middle of nowhere” villages began to find themselves just too far from schools, hospitals, shops, factories, jobs, and more. Young people flee these kinds of areas to pursue careers in big cities, leaving villages mostly empty, with only the elderly left in most of the homes.Historic buildings in a medieval village square, SpainInterestingly, the government in Spain is actually trying to turn things around. They’ve come up with various incentives, including tax breaks for those who move to rural areas, and politicians have been pledging to build new schools, hospitals, and other facilities out in countryside regions. They’ve also funded development for internet networks and roads. However, some fear that the damage has already been done. Estimates suggest that the vast majority of Spain’s population will be living in the country’s biggest cities like Barcelona and Madrid in decades to come. As the world becomes even more dependent on tech and development, the old ways of these little villages may be forgotten.Main square of San Martín del Castañar, Salamanca province, Castile and Leon, SpainStill, with people like Mark Adkinson working to try and save these rustic homes and breathe new life into these Spanish ghost towns, there could be some hope for them yet. Many people outside of Spain have shown a huge interest in purchasing these properties, especially those wishing to enjoy a simpler kind of life.Read another story from us: Eerie Pictures of the Romanian Village Swallowed by Toxic SludgeAt a time when an increasing number of people are pursuing the fast pace of the city, there are still plenty out there, many of whom have grown tired with their own urban lifestyles, looking for something simpler and more natural. For those people, buying a rustic Spanish home or even an entire village for less than a big city apartment might seem like a deal they can’t refuse.last_img read more

The handson guide to Machine Learning with R by Brett Lantz

admin No Comments

first_imgIf science fiction stories are to be believed, the invention of Artificial Intelligence inevitably leads to apocalyptic wars between machines and their makers. Thankfully, at the time of this writing, machines still require user input. Though your impressions of Machine Learning may be colored by these mass-media depictions, today’s algorithms are too application-specific to pose any danger of becoming self-aware. The goal of today’s Machine Learning is not to create an artificial brain, but rather to assist us with making sense of the world’s massive data stores. Conceptually, the learning process involves the abstraction of data into a structured representation, and the generalization of the structure into action that can be evaluated for utility. In practical terms, a machine learner uses data containing examples and features of the concept to be learned, then summarizes this data in the form of a model, which is used for predictive or descriptive purposes. The field of machine learning provides a set of algorithms that transform data into actionable knowledge. Among the many possible methods, machine learning algorithms are chosen on the basis of the input data and the learning task. This fact makes machine learning well-suited to the present-day era of big data. Machine Learning with R, Third Edition introduces you to the fundamental concepts that define and differentiate the most commonly used machine learning approaches and how easy it is to use R to start applying machine learning to real-world problems. Many of the algorithms needed for machine learning are not included as part of the base R installation. Instead, the algorithms are available via a large community of experts who have shared their work freely. These powerful tools are available to download at no cost, but must be installed on top of base R manually. This book covers a small portion of all of R’s machine learning packages and will get you up to speed with the learning landscape of machine learning with R. Machine Learning with R, Third Edition updates the classic R data science book with newer and better libraries, advice on ethical and bias issues in machine learning, and an introduction to deep learning. Whether you are an experienced R user or new to the language, Brett Lantz teaches you everything you need to uncover key insights, make new predictions, and visualize your findings.
