DEMTOCO decries illegal tobacco trading

admin No Comments

first_img– as company records .8B profits before taxThe Demerara Tobacco Company (DEMTOCO) is pushing to have the necessary legislation in place to ensure a level playing field with regard to tobacco trading in Guyana.Passage of the Tobacco Control Bill in the National Assembly, over the years, has been subjected to numerous delays. However, it was last reported back in December that the draft legislation was still in a preparatory phase. There have since been several comments about its importance, including calls made by former Health Minister, Dr Leslie Ramsammy on the importance of having such legislation in place.Shareholders at the 83rd AGM of DEMTOCO on WednesdayAccording to Managing Director of DEMTOCO, Maurlain Kirton, one of the challenges the company is facing is the existence of illicit traded products. She noted that while the company is not opposed to competition, it must be on a balanced playing field.“The push for the company has been for balanced regulations – I’m sure you heard about the impending passing of a tobacco bill. The company is supportive of the passage of a tobacco bill. The concern of the company has to do with a balanced regulation,” Kirton explained to this newspaper on the sidelines of DEMTOCO’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was held on Wednesday at the Pegasus Hotel, Georgetown. This concern was also raised by Chairman Felicio Ferraz, in his report. He pointed out that the widely-available smuggled brands of cigarettes made it exceptionally difficult for the company.“Smuggled brands, which avoid the tax net of the Revenue Authority, continue to pose a challenge to the company,” he stated. In addition, he noted that most of the smuggled brands do not comply with existing product regulation.Nevertheless, Ferraz went on to outline in his report that despite this challenge and others that the local Private Sector faced, DEMTOCO managed to achieve a profit before tax of $2.8 billion in 2016. This, however, represents a 2.3 per cent decline when compared to figures from the previous year. The Chairman outlined that for the third consecutive year, Guyana has experienced a decline in the growth rate of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), moving from 5.2 per cent in 2013 to 2.6 per cent in 2016. Ferraz said DEMTOCO’s portfolio performance reflected the need by customers for more affordable offers, compounded with other factors.“Fortunately, (the) company has made a substantial investment in a sustainable portfolio of products catering for Guyanese discerning consumers. One of our Global Drive Brands, Pall Mall, acted as an obvious choice for Dunhill & Bristol consumers who are seeking quality products at a lower price,” he stated, adding that the impact on revenue was a reduction reflecting a two per cent year-on-year decline.Last year, the company introduced Bristol Vibes – a new menthol product that was launched in October, adding dynamism to the Bristol family. Additionally, the Bristol brand in 2016 had two ‘limited edition packs’ commemorating Guyana’s 50th Independence anniversary from April to June and the New Year’s edition in November and December. Moreover, the Chairman noted that the Board of Directors approved the fourth interim dividend of $12.62 per share which, together with a proposed final dividend of $8.63 per share, brings the total dividend for the year to $66.68 per share, representing a return of 6.5 per cent on the current share price. According to the Chairman, once the final dividend is approved, payment will be made.He went on to outline that the company continued to uphold high standards in delivering its responsibility through its voluntary International Marketing Principles and Corporate Social Investment Programmes. He added that the company has also been campaigning and educating retailers nationwide that tobacco products should only be sold to persons above the age of 18, an initiative which its trading partners have supported.Ferraz concluded that while the economic, business and wider environment continued to remain challenging for 2017, the company will continue to progressively drive and sustain shareholder value going forward.“(DEMTOCO) has provided high-quality tobacco products to Guyana for over 83 years. With our wealth of knowledge and experience, we are indeed the industry leader, and will continuously seek to explore opportunities to satisfy consumer moments. Moreover, the company will persistently engage regulators with respect to the introduction of balanced regulation, which safeguards consumers’ rights of choice and smoking experience,” Ferraz stated.last_img read more

Vindicated wraps up Fivestar’s 2014 schedule of events

first_imgFivestar owner and promoter Justin Donally said it wasn’t easy watching home town favourite Brad Stewart lose his title to Brendan Kornberger, but overall he was happy with how the card played itself out.“All in all I think the fight card was great. As far as locals go it was tough to watch Brad Stewart in the main event lose his title but he’s fighting at that level now where everybody he fights are the best guys in the country,” he explained. “He’s not going to get a guy that’s not in the top 100 in the world. He’s not going to win them all. I spoke to him afterwards and he’s more motivated now than he’s ever been to get back in and get training even harder.”Some of the highlights of the show included the bout between Dylan Lielke and Dane Newall and the women’s fight between Robin Combs and Jamie Herrington. Both Lielke and Newall were undefeated heading into the fight.- Advertisement -“Dylan Lielke stole the show for the evening I think. Him and Dane Newall was a huge talked about fight. I just couldn’t say enough good things about the heart and determination of Dylan in that fight. It was two of the best guys in B.C. for amateurs going at it for the title. It was really fun to watch,” Donally explained. “When you train with somebody every day as well it’s tough to watch them as a promoter sometimes. The two ladies fighting each other from the club here that was another one for Tosha [Mytron] and myself that was kind of hard to watch but they put on a great show and the fans seemed to love it.”The only downside as it relates to the card was the unfortunate timing of Duncan Wilson becoming ill before his fight with Micah Brakefield, however he’s hungry to perform in front of the home crowd when the next opportunity comes.“It was a little bit disappointing Duncan Wilson came down with a chest infection. About Tuesday I was made aware of it. He really wanted to try and fight through it. He cut the weight and went to weigh ins but the doctors couldn’t let him go. He was having too many issues with his chest and breathing issues so they just said it was too unsafe for him to fight,” Donally stated. “He’s the last guy to ever pull out of a fight so for him to have to be stopped it had to have been something serious. He’ll rebound on the next card and hopefully we’ll maybe pick him up another fight this winter before coming back to Fort St. John.”Advertisement Putting on a fight card is no easy task and with that Donally appreciates the community support in helping with making events like Vindicated possible.“Another shout out to the community of Fort St. John. Everybody that bought a ticket, everybody that sponsored, everybody that helped out with the show. This show didn’t sell out as quick as the first one but everybody slammed us the last week and we were 1,200 strong on this show,” he stated. “Without them supporting the event, buying tickets, and sponsoring we’re not able to provide a stage for these athletes to compete on. Also a shout out to my better half Tosha. She does so much on these events and she’s the heart and soul of this company just making everything go round and round all the time.”Going forward Fivetstar organizers are exploring the possibility of putting on a children’s martial arts tournament early in the new year, and another Fivestar Fight League card in April in Fort St. John.last_img read more

That careless driver just might be falling asleep

admin No Comments

first_imgWhile there’s no test to measure driver drowsiness the way that breathalizers check for alcohol, doctors must report the names of patients suffering from disorders that involve lapses of consciousness, including sleep apnea and narcolepsy. About 50 of the 18,000 car crashes in the San Fernando Valley each year are the result of driver fatigue, said Detective William Bustos, assigned to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division. For drivers at risk of falling asleep behind the wheel, Bustos recommends using car pools or public transportation as alternatives. For those working night shifts, driving trucks or cabs, the risk of falling asleep on the road is a battle fought more frequently. It’s 3 a.m. when Mary Ullrich starts her shift at Bea’s Bakery in Tarzana. Although she relies on strong coffee for energy at that early hour, she found something else that helps much more with the early-morning drive: She moved a block away from work. Still, Ullrich said working the night shift is always a struggle. “After a while you get used to it, but your body never really regulates to it,” Ullrich said. “But you do it.” For Boyer, the years of lethargy took a grinding toll on his life. After sleep studies determined he was waking up more than 100 times an hour, Boyer was diagnosed with sleep apnea and underwent throat surgery. The operations provided some relief, but he still awoke about 58 times an hour. He visited Dr. Bryan Keropian, a Tarzana dentist who fitted him with a mouthpiece that Boyer wears at night to restrain his tongue. Boyer said he has finally found his peace. “I wake up refreshed,” Boyer said. “I can drive anywhere now.” Have you ever fallen asleep behind the wheel? How did you overcome this? Tell our transportation blog at www.insidesocal.com/theride. sue.doyle@dailynews.com (818)713-3746 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! “There were times I would get to work and not remember how I got there. I would fall asleep,” said Boyer, 55, who has since received medical treatment for his condition. “I wouldn’t remember if I ran red lights.” Whether it comes from sleep disorders or putting in too many hours at the office, the combination of fatigue and driving results in an about 100,000 crashes, 1,550 deaths and 71,000 injuries a year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It’s not surprising that people drive drowsy. Americans averaged nine hours of sleep a night in 1900, but now average only seven. Losing four hours of sleep is the equivalent of having a blood-alcohol level of 0.10 percent, according to a sleep disorder clinic at Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth, N.J. California law makes it a misdemeanor to drive with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent. Exhausted from hundreds of sleepless nights, Gary Boyer sometimes couldn’t recall making the three-mile drive from his home in Winnetka to his job in Woodland Hills. Waking up about 105 times an hour – about every 30 seconds – will do that to a person. Boyer didn’t realize he suffered from sleep apnea, a disorder in which the tongue blocks the throat until the body jostles itself awake to breathe again. He also didn’t realize he was one of the estimated 103 million drivers a year who fall asleep behind the wheel. last_img read more
