Pensions reductions

admin no comments

first_imgAs of next year, pensioners who spend more than six weeks in Greece face a cut in the rate of their Aged Care Pension due to supplement reductions, according to the Department of Human Services. Hank Jongen, General Manager of the Department of Human Services told Neos Kosmos that although people who receive benefits will still be able to receive their payments whilst overseas next year, they may face a reduction. This will impact people receiving other benefits such as family assistance payments, including the Disability Support Pension.“Other exceptions include payments made under the terms of an international social security agreement and students studying outside Australia as part of their course,” Mr Jongen told Neos Kosmos.“If you are already overseas on 1 January 2013, the old ’13 week’ rule will still apply until you return,” and advises to check your personal circumstances with Centrelink. “As always, I encourage anyone planning a trip outside Australia to contact us if they wish to find out how their payment may be affected. This is even more important if you’re considering moving overseas permanently. There is some valuable information available online, or you can discuss your plans with our customer service officers.” For those who move overseas permanently, the Aged Pension may continue to be paid, except the Pension Supplement which will reduce immediately on departure. “The amount of payment you receive may change again if you remain outside Australia for more than 26 weeks,” he said. “Generally after 26 weeks absence the amount of payment is based on your Australian Working Life Residence. This is how long you have lived in Australia between the age of 16 and Age Pension age. If you have less than 25 years working life residence in Australia you receive a proportional rate of payment.” He says that overseas travel may also impact on other payments. “For example, if you or your partner receive Carer Allowance and leave Australia, this payment may be effected. This can depend on respite days and whether the person you’re caring for goes with you or stays in Australia, as well as whether the trip is temporary or permanent.“If you are holder of a Health Care Card, a Low Income Health Care Card, a Pensioner Concession Card, or a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card and you leave Australia temporarily, your card will remain current for up to six weeks provided you continue to be entitled to the card. If you leave Australia permanently, your card will be cancelled on departure.”For more information go to the Australian Government Department of Human Services website at www.humanservices.gov.au and type ‘overseas’ in the search box. Alternatively, you can phone us on 13 2468, or visit your nearest service centre. Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagramlast_img read more

Appeals Court Rejects Antitrust Suit Against Time Inc Hearst

admin no comments

first_imgA federal appellate court has upheld the dismissal of a longstanding antitrust suit against Hearst and Time Inc.—among other current and former magazine publishers—filed by defunct wholesaler Anderson News, LLC, likely ending a legal battle so protracted that several of its original parties no longer exist. In an opinion released Monday reflecting a unanimous decision from the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Susan L. Carney wrote that the Southern District of New York had ruled correctly in 2015 when it dismissed a $371 million lawsuit brought by Anderson against six major magazine publishers, among other defendants.Anderson’s suit alleged that the publishers illegally colluded to drive it out of business in response to a seven-cent surcharge Anderson attempted to impose, in early 2009, on copies of magazines it delivered to retailers on behalf of the defendants—which included the aforementioned Hearst and Time Inc., as well as American Media, Inc., Bauer Publishing, Hachette Filipacchi Media, Rodale, Hudson News, and four distributors, including Curtis Circulation, who partnered with the publishers. The publishers—who at the time accounted for 42 percent of the U.S. market for single-copy magazine sales—balked at the proposed surcharge, instead opting to go with other wholesalers such as Hudson News and News Group, and Anderson was forced to cease operations and file for bankruptcy just weeks later. Some of the defendants, including AMI, Hearst, and Time Inc., countersued, claiming that Anderson itself had engaged in an illegal conspiracy by pressuring retailers Kroger and Walmart to refuse shipments from other magazine wholesalers and competitor Source Interlink to impose its own, similar surcharge. Both sets of claims were dismissed in the Southern District in 2010, before the Second Circuit reversed the dismissal in 2012, opening the door for Anderson to appeal.“Anderson sought to significantly change the state of the market by suddenly seeking to impose a surcharge and setting an immediate deadline for publishers to take it or leave it,” wrote Carney in her decision upholding the original dismissal. “It is not surprising that the defendants quickly rejected the proposal in favor of switching to existing wholesalers without surcharges, refusing to accept the terms of Anderson’s new business model. No reasonable jury could find on this record that the defendants entered into a ‘conscious commitment to a common scheme designed to achieve an unlawful objective.’”This latest Second Circuit ruling also upheld the dismissals of the counterclaims made against Anderson.“AMI is pleased that the Second Circuit upheld the grant of summary judgment in its favor, affirming AMI’s position that it did not improperly collude with other magazine publishers,” said an AMI spokesperson in a statement, echoing a similar statement from Meredith Corp., which acquired Time Inc. earlier this year.last_img read more

3 killed dozens feared trapped in Mumbai building collapse

admin no comments

first_imgMap of India’s Mumbai locating Bhendi Bazaar, where a four-storey residential building collapsed on Thursday. Photo: AFPAt least three people died and dozens were feared trapped when a building collapsed in India’s financial capital of Mumbai Thursday, after days of heavy rain swamped the city.Rescuers using diggers could be seen sifting through the remains of the four-storey residential building which gave way around 08:40 am (0310 GMT) in the densely populated area of Bhendi Bazaar. It was the latest deadly housing collapse to strike the teeming metropolis-shining a spotlight on poor construction standards in the Asian country-and came after heavy rains and inundations in the city killed 10 people.A spokesman for the Mumbai civic authority’s disaster control team said three bodies had been pulled from the rubble.“Three people are dead and thirteen injured have been rescued from the building collapse. Two firemen also have been injured during the rescue operations,” Tanaji Kamble, told AFP.An official in the control room of India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said dozens more were thought to be trapped, he added.“Forty people are believed to be stuck inside and a 43-member team is conducting rescue operations,” the official told AFP.He said eight or nine families were thought to have been living in the building.Building collapses are common in Mumbai, especially during the monsoon season from late June to September, when heavy rains lash the western Indian city.Severe downpours began on Tuesday and caused flooding across Mumbai and the neighbouring region of Thane. The collapse came as officials said the death toll from the floods was expected to rise above 10, despite the waters receding after better weather.“We are still on the lookout for more missing persons and the number may go up,” Santosh Kadam, spokesman for disaster control in Thane, told AFP.Bhendi Bazaar, a scruffy colonial-era market, is one of Mumbai’s most historic districts. It is currently undergoing a six-hundred-million-dollar redevelopment project that is set to replace hundreds of ramshackle, decades-old low-rise buildings with around a dozen glitzy new tower blocks.Mumbai has been hit by several deadly building collapses in recent years, often caused by shoddy construction, poor quality materials or ageing buildings. The city is particularly vulnerable to deadly collapse with millions forced to live in cramped, ramshackle properties because of rising real estate prices and a lack of housing for the poor.Activists say housing societies, private owners and builders often cut corners to save on costs. They also claim that corruption plays a part with officials sometimes knowingly certifying dilapidated buildings in return for money. In July, 17 people including a three-month-old baby, died when a four-storey building gave way in the northern suburb of Ghatkopar. In 2013, 60 people were killed when a residential block came crashing down in one of Mumbai’s worst housing disasters.last_img read more

first_imgKolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in a Facebook post on Thursday reiterated that the agitating doctors should withdraw their ceasework at NRS Medical College and Hospital, as it has crippled health services across the state.”I appeal to all to restore normal healthcare services to the patients without any further delay. Our government has taken full care of the injured doctor. We pray that he recovers quickly. As per information received, he is stable and improving,” Banerjee said in her Facebook post. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataThe Chief Minister also assured that her government is extending full cooperation and taking all necessary action. But, in spite of that, provocations are coming from other political parties. Calling the NRS incident ‘unfortunate’, Banerjee said: “An unfortunate incident took place in NRS Hospital 3 days ago. I sent my colleague, Chandrima Bhattacharjee, minister of state, Health and Family Welfare, to visit the injured doctor, talk to a section of the junior doctors who are agitating and request them to withdraw the agitation as people are not getting treatment. Cancer patients, kidney patients, accident victims and even children coming from distant places are suffering.” Also Read – Lightning kills 8, injures 16 in stateShe also posted: “I sent Commissioner of Police, Kolkata to talk to the junior doctors. Five persons have been arrested and their bail prayers were rejected by court. One person died and a complaint of negligence of treatment has been lodged. An enquiry has been started to look into the issues from all sides. Our additional chief secretary, Health, visited the injured doctor and met a section of the agitating junior doctors and appealed to them to resume services.” “Today when I visited SSKM, I saw a gathering of outsiders from different political parties shouting slogans in the silence zones of the hospital and stopping emergency services. The family members were crying and outdoor services remained closed. I sent some patients to private hospitals for immediate treatment,” she maintained in her post. Banerjee also stated: “I am grateful to senior doctors and professors who are offering full services to the people. My humble regards to them for their cooperation. Some misinformation is being spread on social media by some political parties.”last_img read more

first_img16Feb Rep. Canfield joins colleagues announcing 2017-18 priorities State Rep. Edward Canfield, D.O., of Sebewaing joined colleagues at the Capitol today to unveil the House Republican Action Plan for the 2017-18 legislative session. The wide-ranging plan maps top priorities over the next two years including making government more transparent, reducing auto insurance rates, putting more money into classrooms to benefit students, fixing roads and bridges, and many other issues. The goal is to continue Michigan’s economic recovery and improve the quality of life for people across the state. One of Canfield’s priorities is addressing Michigan’s no-fault auto insurance rates in a way that helps lower bills, safeguards taxpayers and protects citizens in need of special care after getting hurt in auto accidents.“We’ve got to find a way to crack the nut of the no-fault auto insurance issue,” Canfield said. “We’ve got to find a way to compromise, to get people on the same page.”Canfield also discussed health care as a top priority.
