Weeds have been slow to grow, but they are at it 24 hours a day

admin no comments

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest With the frequent rains, we missed proper burndown timing. Now we must totally rely upon pre-emergent herbicide application and now are working on missing the proper timing for post applications. Consider adding a second component to that glyphosate application when you post- spray your corn or soybeans. The idea is to have a second method of attack on those weeds that may be resistant, have grown a little larger than planned or in areas where you have had problems with in the past. The Ohio & Indiana Weed Control Guide is a great resource for getting management tips on how best to apply glyphosate — see page 13 in the guide. Also see the corn tables starting on page 55 and the soybean tables starting on page 119 to choose a potential partner for post applications. The Guide is sold out for this year but is available free on-line from Mark at https://u.osu.edu/osuweeds/files/2015/11/2016_Weed_Control_Guide-17h5o2i.pdf.Don’t forget about drift. The spring burndown season was a little scary, and hopefully we will be into post spray season soon, so there is still potential for drift onto sensitive crops. Here from the Weed Control Guide are some tips on how to reduce the chances for drift.Off-target movement of herbicidesSpray drift is the downwind movement of spray particles from the application site to non-target areas, some with sensitive plant species. The extent of spray drift increases as:(1) the size of spray droplets decreases,(2) the height above the ground from which the droplets are released increases, and(3) wind speed increases.Drift can be minimized by following these guidelines.Spray when wind speed is low.Use the maximum nozzle orifice size without distorting spray pattern.Reduce spray pressure to the lowest setting without distorting spray pattern.Using nozzles that minimize drift, such as Air Induction, Turbo Teejet, or Flat Fan DriftGuard nozzles.Use drift control agents when permitted by the label.Follow label precautions for drift reduction measures.last_img read more

first_imgPrime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, has expressed condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica, to the families of those killed during one of the strongest tornados ever to hit the United States of America.Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, informed at the Jamaica House press briefing on Wednesday, May 22, that the Prime Minister sent a letter to US President, Barrack Obama, in which she expressed sorrow at the widespread destruction and tragic loss of lives in the state of Oklahoma.Following is the text of the letter:“I am deeply saddened to hear of the many tragic deaths and the widespread destruction of property caused by the passing of a tornado, described as among the deadliest and most destructive in the history of the United States, through the suburbs of Oklahoma City on Monday.“The news is particularly discomforting as reports indicate that the death toll could escalate, with a significant number of missing persons including children from two elementary schools. I am also concerned about the threat of additional tornado strikes and the possibility that other towns and cities remain at high risk.“The Government and people of Jamaica join me in expressing profound condolences to the bereaved relatives and friends of the victims, as well as our deepest sympathy to those who have suffered injuries and been displaced as a result of this disaster.“Our prayers are with the American People, especially those in Oklahoma City and its immediate environs, as you commence the daunting task of rehabilitation and reconstruction.“Please accept, Mr. President, my best wishes and support as you comfort and encourage your people.”It is reported that the tornado, which killed at least 24 persons and destroyed over 2,400 homes, was 1.3 miles wide as it moved through Moore, in the southern part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. Pensions reductions

admin no comments

first_imgAs of next year, pensioners who spend more than six weeks in Greece face a cut in the rate of their Aged Care Pension due to supplement reductions, according to the Department of Human Services. Hank Jongen, General Manager of the Department of Human Services told Neos Kosmos that although people who receive benefits will still be able to receive their payments whilst overseas next year, they may face a reduction. This will impact people receiving other benefits such as family assistance payments, including the Disability Support Pension.“Other exceptions include payments made under the terms of an international social security agreement and students studying outside Australia as part of their course,” Mr Jongen told Neos Kosmos.“If you are already overseas on 1 January 2013, the old ’13 week’ rule will still apply until you return,” and advises to check your personal circumstances with Centrelink. “As always, I encourage anyone planning a trip outside Australia to contact us if they wish to find out how their payment may be affected. This is even more important if you’re considering moving overseas permanently. There is some valuable information available online, or you can discuss your plans with our customer service officers.” For those who move overseas permanently, the Aged Pension may continue to be paid, except the Pension Supplement which will reduce immediately on departure. “The amount of payment you receive may change again if you remain outside Australia for more than 26 weeks,” he said. “Generally after 26 weeks absence the amount of payment is based on your Australian Working Life Residence. This is how long you have lived in Australia between the age of 16 and Age Pension age. If you have less than 25 years working life residence in Australia you receive a proportional rate of payment.” He says that overseas travel may also impact on other payments. “For example, if you or your partner receive Carer Allowance and leave Australia, this payment may be effected. This can depend on respite days and whether the person you’re caring for goes with you or stays in Australia, as well as whether the trip is temporary or permanent.“If you are holder of a Health Care Card, a Low Income Health Care Card, a Pensioner Concession Card, or a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card and you leave Australia temporarily, your card will remain current for up to six weeks provided you continue to be entitled to the card. If you leave Australia permanently, your card will be cancelled on departure.”For more information go to the Australian Government Department of Human Services website at www.humanservices.gov.au and type ‘overseas’ in the search box. Alternatively, you can phone us on 13 2468, or visit your nearest service centre. Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagramlast_img read more

Appeals Court Rejects Antitrust Suit Against Time Inc Hearst

admin no comments

first_imgA federal appellate court has upheld the dismissal of a longstanding antitrust suit against Hearst and Time Inc.—among other current and former magazine publishers—filed by defunct wholesaler Anderson News, LLC, likely ending a legal battle so protracted that several of its original parties no longer exist. In an opinion released Monday reflecting a unanimous decision from the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Susan L. Carney wrote that the Southern District of New York had ruled correctly in 2015 when it dismissed a $371 million lawsuit brought by Anderson against six major magazine publishers, among other defendants.Anderson’s suit alleged that the publishers illegally colluded to drive it out of business in response to a seven-cent surcharge Anderson attempted to impose, in early 2009, on copies of magazines it delivered to retailers on behalf of the defendants—which included the aforementioned Hearst and Time Inc., as well as American Media, Inc., Bauer Publishing, Hachette Filipacchi Media, Rodale, Hudson News, and four distributors, including Curtis Circulation, who partnered with the publishers. The publishers—who at the time accounted for 42 percent of the U.S. market for single-copy magazine sales—balked at the proposed surcharge, instead opting to go with other wholesalers such as Hudson News and News Group, and Anderson was forced to cease operations and file for bankruptcy just weeks later. Some of the defendants, including AMI, Hearst, and Time Inc., countersued, claiming that Anderson itself had engaged in an illegal conspiracy by pressuring retailers Kroger and Walmart to refuse shipments from other magazine wholesalers and competitor Source Interlink to impose its own, similar surcharge. Both sets of claims were dismissed in the Southern District in 2010, before the Second Circuit reversed the dismissal in 2012, opening the door for Anderson to appeal.“Anderson sought to significantly change the state of the market by suddenly seeking to impose a surcharge and setting an immediate deadline for publishers to take it or leave it,” wrote Carney in her decision upholding the original dismissal. “It is not surprising that the defendants quickly rejected the proposal in favor of switching to existing wholesalers without surcharges, refusing to accept the terms of Anderson’s new business model. No reasonable jury could find on this record that the defendants entered into a ‘conscious commitment to a common scheme designed to achieve an unlawful objective.’”This latest Second Circuit ruling also upheld the dismissals of the counterclaims made against Anderson.“AMI is pleased that the Second Circuit upheld the grant of summary judgment in its favor, affirming AMI’s position that it did not improperly collude with other magazine publishers,” said an AMI spokesperson in a statement, echoing a similar statement from Meredith Corp., which acquired Time Inc. earlier this year.last_img read more
