first_imgAcclaimed actress and singer Bellamy Young lost her father to lung cancer, and she is now sharing her personal experience as part of Test. Talk. Take Action., a new awareness campaign focused on increasing people’s understanding of biomarkers and the role they play in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).The campaign – led by Merck, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, in partnership with Young and leading lung cancer advocacy groups – encourages those impacted by NSCLC to learn about biomarkers and talk with their health care provider about testing.Biomarkers, substances that can be found in cancer cells, give doctors a more well-defined picture of a patient’s lung cancer. In addition to being used to diagnose cancer, testing for biomarkers can help doctors make informed decisions about the most appropriate treatment for a patient’s lung cancer. There are several different biomarkers that can be used to plan treatment in NSCLC. These include EGFR, ALK, ROS-1, and PD-L1.“One of the most important parts of the lung cancer journey is becoming informed about what you and your loved ones are facing,” Young explained. “When my Pop was diagnosed with lung cancer, we felt helpless and confused. At the time, I just wanted more resources to help us understand and manage his treatment and care.”Leading lung cancer patient advocacy groups supporting the program include Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, Free to Breathe, Lung Cancer Alliance, Lung Cancer Foundation of America, Lung Cancer Research Foundation, and LUNGevity. These organizations have made it their mission to support people impacted by lung cancer through education, resources and research.Young knows firsthand what people with lung cancer and their loved ones are going through; her father went through 10 months of treatment before he passed away from the disease. She added, “I’m honored to be a part of a campaign that is designed to provide people impacted by NSCLC with information that can help empower them to make informed treatment decisions. I encourage patients and their loved ones to visit www.TestTalkTakeAction.com to get the facts about biomarker testing and start a new dialogue with their health care providers about the next steps in their treatment.”Lung Cancer and the Role of Biomarker TestingLung cancer, which forms in the tissues of the lungs, usually within cells lining the air passages, is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. The two main types of lung cancer are non-small cell and small cell. NSCLC is the most common type of lung cancer, accounting for about 85 percent of all cases. Thanks to advancements in lung cancer research, doctors have found that every lung cancer is different and that they can use biomarker testing to uncover some of the characteristics of a patient’s cancer. Biomarker testing is now widely recommended in NSCLC and by testing, doctors can use the information to plan the best treatment path forward for a patient.“Everyday scientists are learning more and more about lung cancer, including how biomarker testing can play an increasingly important role in the care of people with NSCLC,” said Dr. Suman Bannur Rao, medical oncologist at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. “The results of biomarker testing can provide critical information that enables us to determine the specific treatments that are more likely to work for a patient.”“At Merck, we’re committed to helping patients affected by lung cancer, which includes developing resources to increase understanding about this disease,” said Jill DeSimone, senior vice president, Merck Oncology. “We are excited to work with the lung cancer community and Bellamy Young on Test. Talk. Take Action. and hope that through education, we can help inspire patients to be their own health care advocate by talking with their doctor about biomarker testing and making informed treatment decisions.”To learn more about comprehensive biomarker testing in NSCLC, including PD-L1, talk to your doctor, and visit www.TestTalkTakeAction.com.last_img read more

Celebrating Indian art legends

admin no comments

first_imgLalit Kala Akademi screened two documentaries directed by the veteran theatre personality, E Alkazi from their archives on 19 December evening in the auditorium of the Akademi. These two documentaries bring out the contributions and importance of two painters who gave a new grammar to the language of Indian Art.  One was on Amrita Sher Gil, much acclaimed painter who gave a new meaning to modern Indian painting. She single handedly took the challenge of modernising the Indian painting when already Bengal school and the school following the Victorian styles were dominating the Indian Art world. The ‘bharat-mata’ figure or the realistic depiction of women figures from these already existing schools did not inspire her. She infused raw energy into her works that profoundly talk about a deep understanding of sexuality and freedom of women. Her women—reserved, somber, poignant and with distinct characteristics add a cavernous observation of human psychology. Born, brought up and trained in Europe, she returned to India, she believed, where she belonged. She drew inspirations from Indian cultures and paintings, especially the miniature paintings. Her Three Women or Hill Women or Woman on the Charpoy brings forth her love for painting and Indian society. After a productive year of 1940s, she died in 1941 at the age of twenty-eight from a short period of illness. India lost the princess of canvas much before the independence.  Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’The second one was on MF Husain, the controversial, loved, celebrated poet-painter of Modern India. Alkazi tried to capture the spirit of Husain, with his iconic painting-brush walking stick, walking on the streets of Delhi mingling with his own people. This gave him energy to give human shapes to inanimate objects, which can be seen in his umbrella series. His understanding of the working class and their struggles can be seen in his paintings where he made the cart-bull-man into a composite ‘machine’ yet representing a picture of the dismantled human figure. His Ramayana and Mahabharata series show his brilliant understanding of the Indian culture. He said the figure of woman/shakti is so powerful in his mind that he tried to give expressions to it through Parvati, Saraswati, Draupadi and Mother Teresa. The ‘horse’ that ran for freedom of imagination and creativity in life and on canvas died in 2011.last_img read more

first_imgBollywood actors added a dash of glamour to a chilly afternoon in Delhi as an award-winning short film based on the theme of empowerment of victims of rape and molestation – ‘Ab Mujhe Udnaa Hai – Let me Soar High’ – was screened for a select audience amid rave reviews.Directed by Suujoy J Mukerji, son of legendary actor Late Joy Mukerji, the film is based on a story written by Delhi-based noted advocate-writer-actor Sunil Kapoor. Kapoor’s collection of 61 poems ‘Punam ka Chaand’ was also released at the event that also saw Joy Mukerji’s wife, Neelam, unveil a CD ‘Mein Pyar Ka Rahi Hun’, carrying songs of her superstar husband. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfNeelam remembered Joy as a reluctant star who led a non-controversial life and never let his stardom impact his simple life. “He used to go for walks on the beach and eat street food like all of us. He told his fans not to mob him or treat him differently,” she said. Apart from the presence of the Mukerji family, that owns the iconic Filmalaya studio in Mumbai, actors like Shakti Kapoor, Kanwaljit Singh, actor-turned-politician Manoj Tiwari (Delhi Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party President) and the short film’s lead actress Jasmine Grover also attended the event at USI Residency in the Delhi Cantonment. Sunil Kapoor and environmentalist Suresh Raheja sang popular Mohd Rafi, Kishore and Mukesh melodies of the 1960s and 70s at the event. “As the nation remembers Nirbhaya on her sixth death anniversary, it is time to help victims of sexual assaults and molestation and their families to emerge from trauma without stigmatization,” said Suujoy. The film features veteran actor Kanwaljit Singh who won the jury award for best actor at the Mumbai Film Festival. He won the award for essaying the role of a college professor and the molested girl’s father who believes in keeping pace with the changing times and encourages daughter to fulfill her dreams and potential. The short film’s story and screenplay have been written by Sunil Kapoor, a noted income-tax advocate from Delhi, who has also acted in a forthcoming film ‘The Tiger Trail’. Four stories from Kapoor’s bestselling book ‘A Peacock Feather’ have been picked by Bollywood producers for making feature films. He has authored this book with his twin chartered accountant brother Sudhir. The short film’s awards include the best film award at the UK’s Red Wood Film Festival, Top Shorts, Los Angeles, and Calcutta International Cult Film Festival, sensitively handles the complex issue of stigmatization of the victims of sexual offences and seeks to educate and empower society to make the nation a safe place for daughters.last_img read more

Remember Where You Parked With the Google Maps App

admin no comments

first_imgApril 27, 2017 Ever have a mini panic attack because you couldn’t remember where you parked your car? You may never have to live through that frustrating situation again, thanks to Google. The company on Tuesday introduced a new Google Maps feature for iOS and Android that will help you remember where you parked. On Android (pictured above), tap the blue dot and press “Save your parking” to add your spot to the map. From there, you’ll see a label on the map identifying where you left your car. You can tap that label to add additional details like the exact spot number, an image of your parking spot and the amount of time before the meter expires. The app will even give you a reminder 15 minutes before your meter expires, if you enter this information. You can also send your parking location to friends. The experience is similar on iOS: just tap the blue dot and select “Set as parking location.” From there, you can tap on the parking label to share it with friends or view photos of your parking area.Google Maps for iOS also offers an automatic parking detection feature that should make things even easier, should you choose to set it up. Connect the app to your car using USB audio or Bluetooth and your parking spot will be automatically added to the map when you disconnect and exit the vehicle, Google Maps Product Manager Jeff Albertson explained in a blog post. The update comes after Google in January introduced a new beta Maps feature that gives you a heads up about the parking situation near your destination, so you can be mentally prepared if parking is limited. The Google-owned traffic and navigation app Waze, meanwhile, has a “where to park” feature that can help you locate a spot, as well as a “where I parked” option.
